⚠️ Legal Risk You Need to Know
It's illegal for Korean physicians to directly contact you and provide recommendations unless you're physically in Korea.
❗ What This Means for You
If you get treatment recommendations or cost estimates through social media, you're likely talking to:
Agency staff with no medical training
Clinic employees without medical degrees
Anyone except actual licensed physicians
Without proper medical oversight, you could:
Get scammed into unproven treatments
Meet doctors who just graduated from medical school and did not complete residency training
💸Waste time and money💸 due to medically related delay or cancellations
Zero followup care upon your return home

A screening test is a medical test that is meant to detect an illness at its early stages. Screening tests are most useful when there is treatment that can be done at the early stages of an illness to cure the illness or extend life.
-
The point of screening tests is to catch illnesses early, before they cause symptoms.
Screening tests are most useful when there is treatment that can be done at the early stages of an illness to cure the illness or extend life.
A negative test can provide peace of mind and ease health-related anxiety about certain conditions.
-
False-positive: this is when a test comes back positive even when you don’t have the illness it is testing for. The issue is that we only find out the test was a false positive after additional testing. If you have a positive test, additional evaluation and testing will be recommended. This will have to be done in the United States through your own doctor unless you are planning on traveling back to Korea.
Over-diagnosis: this is when an illness or abnormality is identified, but it probably wouldn’t have caused any problems if it had gone undiscovered.
“Incidentalomas”: this is a term in medicine for an abnormality that is found where the significance is unknown. Additional testing or procedures may be recommended, but they may not give clear answers either. This can cause anxiety, take up time, resources.

A good candidate for a health check-up in Korea is somebody for whom more information is better, somebody who is willing to accept some ambiguity and uncertainty, and somebody who understands that they may need to go through the process and expense of getting follow-up testings in the United States.
The extensive health screening that is available in Korea is not for everybody. The type of screening tests and procedures done in Korea are much more extensive than those offered in the United States. Screening tests are part of the medical culture and Koreans have easy access to healthcare to follow up on any abnormal results. For foreigners, follow-up of any abnormal results would likely need to be done back in their home country.
Alternatively, you can always go back to Korea for another check-up!
